ABOUT US

In 1970, the work moved to the Jones Memorial Center in Chicago Heights, IL with Bro. William Edwards as minister.  The work moved again in 1974 when the church purchased the old Christopher Columbus Club at 312 East 14th Street, Chicago Heights, IL, with Bro. Fred Holden as minister.  In 1979, the work moved when we purchased our present location at 1446 Scott Ave. and Bro. Fred Humphrey became our minister.  After Bro. Humphrey left, Bro. William Edwards took over the work.  In 1985, Fred Merriweather, Sr. was installed by Bro. William Edwards and he is the longest tenured minister of the Chicago Heights Church of Christ.

Some of the ministers who have helped in the work of the Chicago Heights Church of Christ are:  Bro. Norris Foulkes, Bro. Lawrence Anderson, Bro. Hodason, Bro. Littles, Bro. Ben Holloway, Bro. Fred Holden, Bro. Fred Humphrey, Bro. Leroy Smith, Sr., Bro. Leroy Smith, Jr., Bro. Fred Wooden, Bro. Aurelio Myrie, Bro. Fred Merriweather, Sr., Bro. James Jenkins, Sr., and Bro. Kevin Boles, Sr.

In 1959, the late Bro. Norris Foulkes and the late Bro.  John E. Merriweather began Bible classes in the home of the late Bro. Ivy Crim.  From this Bible class, three souls were gained, (Bro. & Sis. Crim and Sis. Lucille Moore), which were being picked up on Sundays and taken to the Robbins Church of Christ for service.  Later, Sis. Maudella Thompson and Sis. Emma Psalms were also being picked up to attend services at Robbins.  Bro. Foulkes and Bro. Merriweather had a debate with seven sectarian preachers in East Chicago Heights of which William Edwards was a part.  From that debate, four souls were added:  William Edwards and his family were baptized.

In 1960, with too many to transport to Robbins Church of Christ, permission was given to Bro. Merriweather by Bro. Foulkes to have services in Bro. William Edwards' basement on Deer Creek Ave. in East Chicago Heights, IL.  Bro. Foulkes sent a few brothers to help Bro. Merriweather with the work and to preach for a while.  Near the end of the summer, Bro. Lawrence Andeerson became minister and the work moved from the basement to City Hall in East Chicago Heights.  In 1963, the work was moved to 16th and Lowe Ave., Chicago Heights, IL.  Many were baptized and the minister at that time was Bro. Hodason, he served until passing on.  Bro. Littles took over the work for a couple of years and then Bro. Ben Holloway served as minister.
